I think, sometimes,
I have the capacity to shock you.  
I have the power to change your
perception of me with a few simple words.  
You stare at me as though I’m a stranger,
never really understanding
what I meant, what I mean.  
How can I explain?  
It’s the same with everyone – they
tilt their heads slightly to one side, trying
to work out what goes
on inside my mind so that
they can find some way to testify that
they know the real me.  

But your instinct was right.  
Sometimes I hide behind false smiles
and take the slightest bit of attention to
carry a lot more than it does.  
Sometimes, when I’m away,
out of your line of vision,
I break down into hysterics because
I’ll never be as important to you
as someone else,
someone else.  

So what would you prefer me to do?
Continue on in this way,
or let out the monster that threatens
to rip apart my charade with its ugly face?
Whatever your decision, you make the call.
